Connect a site
Updated: 10 September 2026
Three ways to connect, what each one changes, and why the mode you use decides where a fix is applied.
The three modes
AbleGuard connects in one of three ways. The mode is not a feature tier — it decides where a fix is applied, which is the honest difference between platforms.
| Mode | How it connects | Where fixes are applied |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress plugin | Installed directly — not on WordPress.org yet | On the server, before the page leaves your site |
| Shopify app embed | Theme app embed — not on the Shopify App Store yet | Alt text via the Admin API; rule-based fixes in the browser |
| Script tag | One tag in your site’s <head> | In the browser, from rules you approved |
Server-side is the strongest of the three, because the corrected markup is what leaves the server and visitors download nothing extra. Where we cannot reach the source, we say so rather than implying the result is the same.
Which mode you get
The platform decides, not the plan:
- WordPress — the plugin, with fixes at the source and alt text written back into your media library.
- Shopify — a theme app embed. Alt text is written through the Admin API so it persists on the product.
- Anything else — Wix, Squarespace, a custom build: the script tag. On some platforms custom code needs a paid plan on their side.
What connecting changes
Connecting a site does not change anything on it. No theme edits, no changes to your pages, and no fixes applied until you approve them one by one.
Scanning runs on our servers, not your host, so nothing heavy happens on your site. The only thing added is the fix mechanism itself — server-side on WordPress, which adds nothing for visitors to download, or a script where source access is not available.
Confirm it worked
- Open the dashboard. A connected site shows its platform and connection mode.
- Run a scan. If the site is reachable, results appear against WCAG 2.2 AA, graded by axe-core.
- If the scan cannot reach a page, that page is listed as unreachable rather than counted as passing.
