Theme app embed, alt text written through the Admin API.

Shopify does not let anyone rewrite your storefront HTML on the server, so we will not pretend otherwise. Alt text is written to your product images through the Admin API, where it is saved for good, and the remaining fixes run in the browser as rules you approved.

  • Alt text saved via the Admin API
  • Fixes run in the browser on this platform

Why it matters

What Shopify lets a tool do.

  • Installed as a theme app embed

The app connects your store and the embed loads the rules you approved. There is no theme code to edit.

  • Alt text through the Admin API

Descriptions are written to your product images, so they live in your store data and survive uninstalling.

  • Fixes run in the browser here

Shopify does not let anyone rewrite storefront HTML server-side. We are saying that plainly rather than blurring it.

  • Approved rules, not guesses

That is the difference from an overlay: deterministic rules you approved one at a time, limited to attributes and CSS.

  • Verified on the live page

Every applied fix is re-measured on your storefront, and an unfinished re-check prints no figure.

  • Not on the App Store yet

The Shopify App Store listing is not live. That is the current state, not a soft launch.

How it works

Three steps, no vocabulary to learn.

  1. Install the app, add the embed

The app connects your store and the theme app embed loads the approved rules. No theme code to edit.

  2. Alt text goes into your product images

Descriptions are written to the images themselves through the Admin API, so they persist in your store data rather than being injected on each page view. A human description is never overwritten.

  3. The rest is applied in the browser, then verified

Attributes and CSS only, from rules you approved one by one, and every fix is re-measured on the live page. If a re-check cannot finish, no improvement figure is shown.

What is permanent, and what is applied.

On Shopify the honest split matters: some of what this does is written into your store forever, and some of it runs while the app is installed.

Alt text goes into your product images.

Written through the Admin API to the images themselves, not injected per page view, and never over a description a human wrote.

  • Saved in your store data
  • Survives uninstalling the app
  • Human descriptions left untouched
A product image with a suggested description, plus states showing it saved, a human description left alone, and a decorative image given an empty alt.

The rest is applied in the browser.

The same delivery mechanism an overlay uses, because Shopify permits nothing else. What differs is that these are fixed, approved, verified rules rather than continuous guessing.

  • Not server-side on this platform
  • Rules you approved one by one
  • Attributes and CSS only
A comparison of the two modes: fixed on the server on WordPress, applied in the browser on Shopify.

Measured on your storefront afterwards.

A browser-side fix still gets a second scan of the live page. If it cannot finish, no improvement figure is shown, and a fix that made things worse is flagged.

  • Both figures are measurements
  • Regressions flagged, not shipped
  • No figure when the re-check fails
A before score of 61 and an after score of 79 re-measured live, with the rule that an unfinished re-check shows no figure.

Frequently asked questions

About shopify. The product-wide questions are on the features page.

How is this different from an overlay?

An overlay guesses at everything, all the time, and hides the guessing behind a widget. Here every rule was approved by you, applies to attributes and CSS only, and is re-measured on your live page. On Shopify the delivery mechanism is the same; what it delivers is not.

Does the alt text stay if I uninstall?

Yes. Alt text is written to your product images through the Admin API, so it lives in your store data. The browser-side fixes stop when the app embed is removed.

Can you fix Shopify checkout?

Not the parts Shopify controls. Checkout is locked down by the platform, which is a real limit on any tool, including this one.
